Developing Lightweight Web Services with XML_RPC

  • David Sklar

Abstract

XML-RPC is a way to call a procedure on a remote computer. (RPC stands for Remote Procedure Call.) In your PHP programs, you can be both an XML-RPC client (calling functions on other computers) and an XML-RPC server (running functions in response to remote requests). XML-RPC accomplishes these remote procedure calls by passing XML messages over HTTP connections. An XML-RPC client packages information about the procedure it wants to call and the arguments to the procedure in an XML document. Then, it passes that XML document to an XML-RPC server over a regular HTTP POST request. The XML-RPC server looks at the XML document, calls the appropriate local function, and returns the results as another XML document as the response to the HTTP request.
