I once attended a conference where an information scientist employed by NASA spoke on some of their activities. He said, “At NASA, we tend to break things into two groups, ‘down and in’ or ‘up and out.’” He went on to explain that the focus of their engineers and scientists was on the details of the interaction of molecules, chemicals, and the environment. Astrophysicists were preoccupied with what was out there and how to get to it. In this book, most of the focus has been down and in. In this chapter, I’d like to look up and out at some of the things that could make the future of storage networks fascinating indeed.
