Samba is a wonderful tool when it works correctly—it enables you to deliver vital services to many clients using a robust host OS and a server that provides many configuration options. Unfortunately, Samba doesn’t always work as you’d like. Problems can arise because of Samba misconfiguration, problems on other SMB/CIFS systems on the network, firewall issues, network hardware problems, and more. Tracking down problems is as much art as it is science, but this chapter looks at some of the common problems in Samba configuration and provides information on how to go about locating the source of a problem.
