Samba Backups

Abstract

Computers are imperfect devices. Hard disk failures are particularly troublesome because your data are at risk. The usual protection against data loss is backups—storing copies of the data on a medium other than the main hard disk, ideally one that can be removed from the computer and stored in a safe, or even off-site. Unfortunately, although backing up a single computer usually isn’t too difficult, backing up all the computers on a network can be quite a challenge. One tool that can help you overcome this challenge is Samba, and this chapter is devoted to Samba and its role in performing backups.
