Most of this book focuses on administering Samba via its text-based configuration files—mainly smb.conf. Many tools enable Samba configuration via point-and-click interfaces, though. These tools can be very helpful for new Samba administrators or for those who don’t need to do much with the server. Even experienced administrators might find these tools helpful for quick jobs or in unusual circumstances, such as when administering an unfamiliar Samba system. These tools have the advantage of preventing configuration errors caused by mistyped parameter names, incorrect parameter placement, and so on. They can’t prevent more fundamental errors, though, such as creating a read/write share when a read-only one would be more appropriate. Also, some of these tools provide access to a very limited range of Samba options; you may have no choice but to delve into the raw configuration files to accomplish certain tasks.
