It is disconcerting to be in the woods and suddenly realize that you haven’t a clue as to where you are or how to get to where you are going. As I’ve learned, it is additionally embarrassing when you are only a few minutes by foot from your home. Even relatively small patches of public conservation land, bounded on all sides by roads, houses, and other implements of civilization, can seem like impenetrable wilderness that will consume your existence, or at least delay dinner. I can remember plunging along a “shortcut” in pursuing a cache and confusedly wandering about for a good hour or more.
