Abstract

Windows Services (sometimes called NT Services) are exclusive to the Windows NT series of operating systems, rather than the 9x and Me range of Microsoft operating systems. Their primary useful feature is that you can configure them to start when the OS starts and before any user has logged on. Other techniques to start programs automatically, such as the Startup group in the Programs menu and HKLM\Software\Microsoftїndows\CurrentVersion\Run in the Registry, start the program only when a user logs onto the system. In cases where a process should be started whether anyone logs on or not, a Service is usually the answer. This is particularly important with Servers that are unattended.
