Abstract
Database performance is affected by a lot of factors, including the server hardware, the operating system configuration, and the database configuration. As database administrators (DBAs) and developers, we can set only so many knobs at the hardware and operating system level to improve performance. We can have the biggest impact on our database’s performance by designing an efficient database architecture using indexes and compression where appropriate. We can also design queries that leverage the latest hints, locking, and other techniques.
