Abstract

SQL Server 2000 offered SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) web service support via SQLXML. The SQL Server 2000 model relied on a loose coupling of SQL Server and Internet Information Services (IIS), making setup and configuration a bit of a hassle. The end result was that a lot of developers found that creating .NET web services in the middle tier was a far more flexible (and easier to use) solution than the SQL Server 2000/ SQLXML/IIS model.
