Abstract
One of the most prominent new enhancements to SQL Server 2005 is the integrated SQLCLR. The SQLCLR is a SQL Server-specific version of the .NET Common Language Runtime that allows you to run .NET code in the database. SQLCLR programming is a broad subject that could easily fill an entire book, and in fact it does. Pro SQL Server 2005 Assemblies by Robin Dewson and Julian Skinner (Apress, 2005) is an excellent resource for in-depth coverage of SQLCLR programming. This chapter will discuss the methods used to extend SQL Server functionality in the past and explain the basics of the new SQLCLR programming model.
