The PayPal API

  • Chapter

Abstract

In 2004, PayPal opened up a range of functionality to developers with the release of the first version of the PayPal API. For those unfamiliar with the term, “API” stands for application programming interface. Wikipedia defines an API as “the interface that a computer system, library or application provides in order to allow requests for services to be made of it by other computer programs, and/or to allow data to be exchanged between them.”1 And this is essentially what PayPal added to its repertoire with the public API: a way to programmatically make requests of the PayPal system and receive data in return. Put another way, the API allows you to interact with the PayPal system without needing to use a web browser to log in to your PayPal account.
