Summary

Using the new DisplacementMapFilter can drastically enhance static and animated designs. With this feature it is possible to create professional-looking motion graphics almost completely in Flash-effects that would otherwise have to be created in programs like After Effects and then imported. And better yet, these effects can be applied to image files loaded externally for even greater flexibility.

Now that you’ve completed this chapter, you’ve learned the following lessons:

  • Designers can easily program visual effects into their motion designs using the new filter effects in Flash.

  • Applying filter effects for displacement maps have a very encouraging Return On Effort.

  • Displacement maps can be applied to still images as well as animated images.

  • Bitmaps for displacement maps should be as optimized as possible to keep down file size and CPU strain for the viewer.

  • Using less complex bitmaps for displacement textures will minimize strain on the viewer’s CPU.

  • Designers can create looping animations using alpha channel tweens to smooth the transitions into the loop effect.
