Abstract

Emerging from the Columbine massacre, there were multiple stories about Eric Harris or Dylan Klebold asking for a confession of faith from some of their victims. In June 1999, Kenneth Woodward of Newsweek mentioned four such stories: Cassie Bernall and Rachel Scott, who were killed, and Valeen Schnurr and Kacey Ruegsegger, who were wounded but survived.1 Yet it was the story of Cassie’s death that received the widest dissemination and initially overshadowed all others.
