Abstract

Over the past fifty years substantial developments have been made in the understanding and treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. We have moved from a solely disease orientated biological model to a new conceptualisation known as stress-vulnerability which acknowledges the role of environmental and psychological factors in relation to the course and outcome of psychosis. This model has led to the development of a range of innovative evidence based psychosocial interventions all of which reinforce the need for professionals to form collaborative working alliances with service users and their families.
