Abstract
Chapters 4 through 7 have revealed the extent to which state and society have changed since the death of Mao. This chapter takes a broader view of these changes by analyzing the changing nature of state-society relations. First, it reviews the Mao years and the legacies it inherited from traditional China. Second, it looks at how the reforms have impacted on state-society relations and how researchers have tried to categorize the changes.
