Part of the book series: Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science ((BSPS,volume 278))

Hessen has not yet found his biographer. The following compilation by the editors collects the most essential verifiable information available from various publications. We hope this volume will encourage further research into Hessen’s life and work.1 Boris Mikhailovich Hessen (Gessen) was born on August 28, 1893 (new style) in Elisavetgrad, a small Ukranian manufacturing city (now called Kirovograd in Russian, and Kirovohrad in Ukranian). Elisavetgrad was the seat of the provincial government of Cherson, the region now called Kirovohrad.
