This chapter will discuss the influence of epistemological beliefs on learners’ perceptions of alternate learning environments such as online learning. Epistemological assumptions will be examined on three levels addressing institutional, faculty, and individual learner perspectives. Questions to be explored include: What are the dominant beliefs about knowledge and knowing in our educational system today? What are our students’ beliefs about knowledge and knowing? How do we account for them and how do they align with a new paradigm of learning and a non-localized learning environment?
