A perfunctory comparison of what appeared 50 years ago in The Future of Arid Lands with our viewpoint today would not be instructive. It would cloud the lessons that we might learn from that early attempt at synthesis. Instead, this chapter places The Future of Arid Lands in the broad context of the scientific knowledge and attitudes of its time, considering in particular how these might have shaped its perspectives.
