We review all known optical and other relevant properties of the two solid solutions CdxHg1−xGa2S4(x = 0⋯1)and AgxGaxGe1−xS2(x = 0.17⋯0.5)emphasizing their unique advantages as nonlinear optical crystals for the mid-IR spectral range between 5 and 12 μm and describe all frequency conversion schemes realized so far with them as well as future potential applications.
Keywords: Ternary and quaternary semiconductors, defect chalcopyrites, solid solutions, nonlinear optical crystals, mid-infrared spectral range, down-conversion, optical parametric oscillators, optical parametric amplifiers, ultrashort laser pulses.
