Process and Health Monitoring Using Fiber Bragg Grating Distributed Sensor for Vacuum Infusion Process

Experimental Analysis of Nano and Engineering Materials and Structures

Abstract

Vacuum infusion process (VIP) has been accepted for composites industry over last decade due to low fabrication cost and applicapability to complex and large composite structures. Vacuum is used as the driving force to impregnate preform with resin [ 1 ]. VIP has been applied to automotive, aerospace, boat, and various industrial fields widely. Process control and the qulity assurance of composites structure are required. Especially resin flow is very important factor in VIP because resin should be impregnated into a preform perfectly without dry spot before starting gelation of resin. Residual stress is generated due to shrinkage of matrix in thermosetting resin during cure. These will be causes of delamination [3] and lower dimensional stability in composite structures. Therefore, control of the manufacturing processes is needed through resin flow monitoring and cure monitoring.
