Leadership Giftedness: Is It Innate or Can It Be Developed?

  • Chapter
International Handbook on Giftedness

Abstract

This chapter describes a special form of giftedness in the domain of leadership. Although this domain has been officially recognized in the United States Office of Education definition of giftedness since 1972, the chapter will focus on understanding what makes this form of giftedness different in outcomes and hbox nurturance than for other forms of giftedness. The first section of the chapter will review the literature on giftedness in leadership. The remaining sections of the chapter will focus on specific research conducted to determine whether the innate characteristics and behaviors of leadership can be developed more fully through a Leadership Development Program. Ultimately, the chapter will discuss just what may be the “true” innate aspects of leadership and what behaviors, perceptions, and traits may be developed through concerted training to aid in leadership skill.
