Abstract

Amorphous, or noncrystalline matter, is the condensed state representative of the absence of the long-range order typical of crystalline materials. It is the end point of a hierarchy of structures with progressively lower structural order, connecting ideal perfect crystals to entropy disordered crystals, incommensurate (aperiodic) structures, quasicrystals, glassy solids. Although in principle related to different situations, the terms amorphous, noncrystalline, glassy, and vitreous are used as equivalents to each other throughout this work.
