Abstract
The majority of alternative schools, or at least of those introduced in print, appear to be schools and programs in Europe and America. The Jiyu Gakuen was a Japanese school that was made known in the West during the time of the new education movement in the 1920s. This was a rare case, however, and it is only recently that alternative schools (and programs) in Thailand and India have finally begun to be introduced in monograph form.1
