Since the pioneering studies by Horwitz and Wenden in the late 1980s, research on student beliefs about second language acquisition (SLA) has exploded, as measured not only by the large number of studies conducted, e.g. in the form of replications or adaptations of the Beliefs about Language Learning Inventory (BALLI) but also by the wide variety of approaches and definitions used by scholars in their studies.
