Abstract
Norway has taken measures to protect Arctic and Antarctic islands. Recently two small islands near Svalbard were declared nature reserves. Approximately 65 % of the of the Svalbard archipelago is now protected. The Environmental Council for Jan Mayen has developed an Action Plan for 2000–2005 drafting protection measures that are under consideration by the Ministry of the Environment. Protective limitations affect all activities on the island, including research.
