Abstract: The best and most robust software standards emerge from a community of developers working in both academic and industrial settings. This community does not arise automatically from large research programs, but must be carefully supported. In the context of the DARPA Communicator program, we show how the Galaxy Communicator Software Infrastructure (GCSI) fostered the development of such a community.
