The focus of this chapter is on the design of error recovery dialogs in oral human-machine systems. We will investigate on two related issues: on the one hand, how to recognize user’s detection of errors by the artificial agent, on the other one how to avoid frustrating error recovery subdialogs. Although many of the possible choices at the design level depend on the capabilities of the dialog system, we will show how a careful design can be provided even for simple spoken dialog systems.
Key words: Miscommunication, human-machine misunderstanding, error recovery, misrecognition.
