Reaching New Standards: Geography’s Return to Relevance in American Education
Why do Americans need to know geography? In his collection of essays, Me Talk Pretty One Day, humorist David Sedaris (2000: 201) writes “When asked, any high school teacher can confidently answer that the knowledge will come in handy once the student hits middle age and starts working crossword puzzles in order to stave off the terrible loneliness.” Although the thought of hitting middle age can induce anxiety in many folks, a more urgent problem is being caused by an educational system that, for many children, does not teach the practical, ethical, and intellectual values of geography. Fortunately, discernible progress has been made in reforming geography education in American schools.
