This chapter discusses the future role of intelligent agents in terms of their ability to transform enterprise portals into richer and broader mediums for organizational knowledge work. Though the artificial intelligence community has been making good progress in the development and application of intelligent software for several decades now, it has only been in recent years that a new set of technologies and standards has come to fruition which promises the real development of agent-based applications in portals which facilitate the creation, distribution, and use of knowledge across the firm. The beauty behind these new technologies and standards is that they facilitate the formation of intelligent agents in knowledge portal designs which can access the meaning behind the information stored in Web-based content, and moreover, utilize and capitalize on that meaning in ways that have never been done before.
