Abstract
Uncertainty and poverty in the lives of individuals and groups have been major concerns of social administration. As these pathologies of the human condition have been studied by means of different and often unrelated perspectives, a complication of interdisciplinary studies, the result has been that social administration as a subject has appeared to be inchoate. But this under-estimates its strength. By considering its philosophical and historical legacies and constraints, theoretical and empirical issues, academic social administration can be revealed to possess a measure of cohesion.
