Abstract
Twelve years ago a protocol for clinical trial of an investigational drug intended for the treatment of severe hypertension was submitted to the Human Studies Committee of one of the foremost research hospitals in the United States. The committee declined to authorize the study because in their judgement no clinical need existed for additional antihypertensive agents. Physicians who treat hypertensive patients could not then and cannot yet live in such a fool’s paradise.
