Abstract

Louis XIV, the greatest representative of the divine right of monarchy, died in 1715. Some eighty years later the French Revolution had run its course, the mass had developed into a powerful political force and a new nationalistic spirit was fast emerging. The eighteenth century witnessed in fact the passing of one epoch and the birth of our own age.
