Improvement of Adaptive Control of Milling Machine by Non-Contact Cutting Force Detector
A high sensitive cutting force detector is indispensable to adaptive control (AC) of machine tools. In this paper a non-contacting magnetic cutting force detector for a milling machine is described. The accuracy of the detector is highly improved by eliminating the magnetically inherent noise.
What matters in a practical application of AC is the time lag of the feed rate response to an actual cutting force. To reduce the time lag, a new controlling method of feed rate is derived, using not an average but an instantaneous cutting force signal as a reference of control signal. The effectiveness of this control method is shown in detail, in an end mill cutting experiment.
