Abstract

It is always a distinction and the greatest honour to be invited to deliver the opening address of the Machine Tool Design & Research Conference. On this occasion I feel that a particular responsibility attaches to that honour, remembering that this—the sixteenth such conference—is the last at which that distinguished academic, Professor Franz Koenigsberger, will have a formal organisational responsibility. It is inconceivable that there will not be many future occasions when he will attend this platform, to continue the work which he has so carefully nurtured during his tenure of office in Manchester. It is this work—the proper combination of academic facility with the industrial need—that I propose to examine further in the course of this address.
