England’s most northerly county, Northumberland suffered a major boundary change in the south-east corner in 1974 when the new county of Tyne and Wear came into being, with Newcasde upon Tyne as its centre. With its 70-mile long coastline, from just north of the Tyne to the Scottish border, the county is now bordered by Durham and Tyne and Wear in the south, by Cumbria in the west and the Scottish border in the north.
