Abstract
Berkshire lies between the Home Counties and the West Country—the outward spread of Greater London and the downland stretches of Wiltshire. About a third of the former county, roughly between a line drawn below the Vale of the White Horse and the northern boundary made by the River Thames from Goring to Lechlade, was transferred to Oxfordshire in 1974. At the same time the districts of Eton and Slough, formerly in Buckinghamshire, were added to the county.
