The boundaries and area of Lancashire were changed radically in 1974 with the creation of Merseyside and Greater Manchester (both consisting largely of areas formerly in Lancashire) and with the transfer of the Furness area to Cumbria. Lancashire gained an area in the north east, previously in the North Riding of Yorkshire.
