The Powder Metallurgy, Dynamic and Quasistatic, of Stainless Steel Scrap Turnings
Interest in the recycling of scrap metal grows in times of “economic crisis”. In order to sustain this interest in more normal times it is essential that the processing of this relatively pure “raw material” in which the consumer regions are particularly rich, should be cheaper than the processing of low purity ores.
One possible step in the processing of scrap metal is the compaction of swarf. This could be in a conventional powder metallurgy process or as a means of producing a billet for subsequent processing. The mechanical properties of the compacts both after compaction and after sintering, will determine the possible uses and the subsequent processing that is necessary. Experiments have been conducted on the compaction and sintering of stainless steel turnings in order to determine the possibilities of swarf P.M. Both quasistatic and dynamic compaction has been employed. Dynamic compaction was usually the superior technique.
