Summary
The rapidly progressing development of electronic components has, as in other areas of automation, strongly influenced the design of control systems. Thus new developments in NC controls are being governed more and more by the availability of new highly integrated components such as microprocessors and semiconductor memories. Explanations are given of new terms like microprocessor control or multi processor system, and an attempt is made to show the properties and functions of these new components and the trends they are following. Their influence on design and functions of modern NC control is described. In this context some interesting control functions are explained more closely. Criteria important for the end-user, i.e. programming, handling, reliability and diagnosis are treated, and today’s state of art is illustrated. Reference is made to consideration of the interests of the end-user of NC machine tools as a prerequisite for positive development of the market. The future will show to what extent the present state of NC control design can be improved upon.
