The Aftermath

  • John Kerr

Abstract

Next day Mr Fraser as Prime Minister advised me of the Ministers he recommended for appointment in the caretaker Government. Before swearing them in, in the main drawing-room of Yarralumla, I said to them: ‘Gentlemen, the Prime Minister before being commissioned yesterday assumed responsibility for my dismissal of the previous Government and for the double dissolution which followed. He has told me you are all prepared, with him, to assume that responsibility. To emphasise the importance of the matter I will ask each of you to confirm it, before I administer the oath of office.’ All confirmed it. I then spelled out the specific undertakings given by Mr Fraser the day before and asked if all understood they were bound by those undertakings. All answered yes and the swearing-in proceeded.
