Summary

Skin care is an important part of the long-term rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injury or disease. The aim of our programme of long-term rehabilitation is indoctrination of the patient in the importance of skin care, regular inspection of the skin by the patient and the recognition that early blemishes require prevention if they are not to develop into sores. The successful prevention depends on the avoidance of prolonged pressures acting on the skin. Methods of regular pressure relief or the use of special support surfaces are described which are applicable to patients in bed and in wheelchairs.
