Abstract
This paper presents some results of an experimental investigation made to ascertain the characteristic deformation and working pressures in quasi-static, incremental heading of short, thick-walled, cylindrical tubes clamped at one end. Three types of heading dies were used: a flat top, a hemi-spherical top and a flat top truncated-conical. The effect of varying the specimen’s initial dimensions — lo/Do ratios, and die profile shapes on variation in die load- die movement curves, specific pressure, the geometry of the deformed specimens and on’ the folding curves were studied and the results presented. A characteristic feature of the deformation mechanism noted during the tubular heading process was the formation of fold-over of the bore-wall material in the thick-walled tubes due to plastic shearing.
