Abstract
It is easy to define the common ground for literature written in English in Southern Africa. West Africa, with the sheer mass and vitality of Nigeria alone, and the ancient cultural links between Coastal states and Europe and the USA, also offers the reader a certain idea. In contrast, East Africa does not seem so easy to comprehend. The history of the region is more diverse, its encounter with Western culture and with the English tradition not so clear.
