Abstract

When I first saw Malcolm Lowry in Granada, Spain, on May 19, 1933, bells did not ring nor did rockets flash. In fact, I barely noticed him, registering merely, and peripherally at that, two solid florid men at an adjoining table, one balding, a third man, smaller, nutlike; and a pallid “madonna” whose dark hair, tightly pinned, lent her an aspect of enforced submissiveness.
