Meetings of European Heads of Government occurred quite frequently but on an ad hoc basis until 1975. Since 1975 there has always been at least one ‘European Council’ during each member state’s six-month Presidency of the Council of Ministers. The following summits have taken place since the United Kingdom joined the Community in 1973.
