Although feminist theorists are still in relatively early stages of constructing accounts of the state, a number of different narrative strands are emerging. In some instances the rudimentary narratives of the theorists overlap with the full-blown stories created by contemporary women novelists. Other theoretical stories are missing from the literary ones. But in almost every case in which the two overlap, the narratives of the novelists critique those of the theorists, either explicitly by offering different versions of the same story or implicitly by constructing alternative stories.
