Abstract

Freedom fighter, poet, lawyer, and journalist Gopabandhu Das (1877–1928) was educated in English at a school in Puri. When he was in the sixth grade, his guru, Ramachandra Das, introduced him to Basudev Rath, a student of Sanskrit, saying: “I have introduced you two to each other; I have joined East and West.”1 The two friends would go to their guru every evening and continue their discussions with him till midnight.
