Abstract

The Commonwealth of Oceana was published in October or November 1656. But James Harrington had started writing it seven years earlier, after the execution of Charles I. It reflects the problems of the years 1649–56. Though cast in the form of a political romance, it was intended as a serious proposal for immediate implementation.
