Abstract

Mental health professionals have always needed to have some knowledge of the law as it relates to mental disorder. However, this knowledge is often narrow in scope, extending only to legislation dealing with the compulsory hospitalisation and treatment of individuals with a psychiatric diagnosis. As we shall see in the following discussion, the interaction between law and mental disorder is much more complex than that and covers many situations that have little or nothing to do with hospitalisation or treatment.
