Abstract
The main purpose of this chapter is not to enter the long-standing debate about the causes and consequences of nationalism. Instead, I will ask: how do different conceptions of nationalism fit into a general theory of the nature of advanced societies? The reason for seeking such an integration is that the problem of unit size has become one of the key issues in contemporary sociological theory. That is, should sociological theory aim at explaining social change on a global level, on the level of comparisons between individual nation states, or some other unit of analysis? The strength or weakness of nationalism and of the nation state should go a long way towards resolving this issue.
